Dáil committee to meet retail sector in Mayo

Mayo Fine Gael TD John O’Mahony has welcomed the announcement that the Joint Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation will hold a meeting in Castlebar on Monday April 22 to discuss issues that are relevant to the retail sector.

Deputy O’Mahony has confirmed that the following topics will be discussed at the meeting: The impact of the black market on the retail sector, future developments in the retail sector, and licensing requirements in the sector.

“The importance of the retail sector both in the provision of employment and in providing a vital public service to the community cannot be overestimated and its future well being will be pivotal to how our economy recovers from the current set of circumstances,” said Dep O’Mahony.

“From the small rural shop to the larger urban outlet, the retail sector is everywhere in our community. People depend on the sector for service and employment and when it comes to supporting the local community the retail sector is frequently the first to respond.

“But the past few years have been very difficult for businesses operating in the sector and the downturn has been acutely felt. This meeting, which is one of a series being held in the regions, will look at how the sector has been impacted upon and of ways to deal with the issues that are likely to evolve as time goes on.”

All the various stakeholders in the sector have been invited to the meeting and it is Dep O’Mahony’s wish that as many people as possible make every effort to attend. It promises to be a very informative night with a relevant agenda, he said. The meeting will be held in Aras an Chontae, Castlebar, at 9.30pm on Monday April 22.
