A long standing cash and carry business was extensively damaged by a fire that broke out on Monday night and took a number of hours to get under control. The fire occurred at Tuffy’s Cash and Carry in Bohernasup and caused a number of roads to be closed around the town as five units from Ballina, Enniscrone, and Crossmolina fire stations battled the blaze. With fumes and smoke emanating from the building for a long time, nearby residents were advised to stay indoors and keep their windows and doors closed. Tuffy’s Cash and Carry has been in operation for long number of years and employed 30 people in the town on a full and part time basis.
The members of Ballina Town Council all expressed their condolences to the business owners and the staff at this current time at their meeting on Wednesday night and praised the efforts of the emergency services in dealing with the blaze. Cllr Barry McLoughlin asked the meeting about what plans were in place in the town to deal with major incidents like this. Town manager Paul Benson told the meeting, “Mayo County Council has a major emergency plan that is put into action by the fire service and they control the scene at any major incident like what unfortunately happened at Ballina this week.”
Meanwhile BWG Foods has announced a significant €2 million refurbishment of Value Centre Cash and Carry, Castlebar following fire damage to the business last summer. The works are scheduled to be completed in June this year and will see Value Centre Castlebar restored to a full service cash and carry. Located in Moneen Industrial Estate the business employs 14 staff locally and has been in operation for over 30 years.
