Man before court after car door forced open

A man pleaded guilty at Castlebar District Court this week to unlawfully interfering with a car.

On February 15 2013 at 3.55am, gardaí received a report that two men were interfering with a parked car on Thomas Street, Castlebar.

Gardaí arrived at the scene and observed a blue Toyota Corolla that had its door forced open, and underneath the steering wheel the starter had been pulled out. Vice grips were found near the vehicle.

Two witnesses showed gardaí two men who were walking away from the scene. One of the men was David Fennell, Apartment 2 over The Golden Sea, Castlebar. The second man got away and was not identified.

Fennell told gardaí that he and the other man were on their way to the pub; it was 4am. He had black gloves in his pocket at the time and was arrested on suspicion of interfering with the car.

The 25-year-old from Dublin moved to Mayo six years ago. The defendant had four previous convictions, however he had not come to Garda attention in Mayo.

Judge Mary Devins remanded him on continuing bail to court on June 5 for a probation report.
