Watch the sunrise from Connacht’s Highest Mountain

Mayo's Mweelrea mountain has been selected as one of 10 Irish mountain locations to feature in the 2013 Sunrise Summit Challenge, taking place on April 14. Hikers, adventurers and families of all levels of experience are invited to take part in the Irish Red Cross charity event in which they will hike through the early morning darkness, reaching the mountain summit in time to watch the sunrise over Connacht.

The remote grit and sandstone massif of Mweelrea, also known as the Grey Bald Mountain, stands at 819 meters and is Connacht’s highest mountain. Vikki Walshe, Irish Red Cross Challenge Coordinator, says: “With spectacular views of Killary Harbour, the Atlantic coast and Connemara, Mweelrea offers beautiful sunrise summit experience.”

The Sunrise Summit Challenge offers a unique opportunity to take part in an unforgettable mountain adventure whilst also raising funds for the Irish Red Cross’ humanitarian work in Ireland and around the world. The April 14 event, which will simultaneously take place at 10 mountain locations across Ireland, will be led by fully trained Irish Red Cross mountain guides.
