Westport councillor wants people fined for not wearing high-vis vests

Fianna Fáil town councillor Brendan Mulroy wants it to be an offence for anyone to walk on the roads without wearing a high-visability vest.

During the town council’s monthly meeting last week, the councillor said that the proposal “should be drawn up by this town council chamber that it should be an offence to be on the side of the road without wearing a high-vis vest.”

Cllr Mulroy said that those not wearing the safety vest when required should be fined as the practice of not wearing them while it is dark is “something that has got out of hand”.

Cllr Myles Staunton fully supported this proposal as did councillors Christy Hyland and Margaret Adams.
