Mayo property tycoon made up kidnapping story

It has been reported that Swinford property tycoon Kevin McGeever, who claimed he was held captive, made up the whole story in order to get out of his debts.

Mr McGeever (68 ) was found wandering in a dishevelled state on a road near Ballinamore in January.

The word ‘thief’ had been inscribed on his forehead and he gave gardaí sketchy information about his whereabouts, saying that he was kidnapped from his home in Craughwell, Co Galway, on May 27 2012, and was held captive in a darkened container, where he was fed a ham sandwich and water on a daily basis. He claims that his kidnappers demanded €10 million in ransom.

Last weekend he was arrested and questioned for 24 hours in Gort Garda Station on suspicion of wasting Garda time. A file is being prepared for the DPP. Following this it was reported the Mr McGeever admitted it was all an elaborate ruse designed to keep out-of-pocket investors off his back. Mr McGeever lived in a hideaway in the west of Ireland, grew his beard and his fingernails, and ate sparsely to lose weight. He wrote thief on his head and was driven to Leitrim. He did not realise that a Garda investigation would take place.

Mr McGeever had previously been held by Dubai police in relation to his property dealings.
