The triumph of Easter Passion Play at Ballintubber Abbey

Ballintubber Passion Play is now in its 25th year of production. It is enacted in the grounds of Ballintubber Abbey, which were landscaped in 1986 with just such an event in mind. It involves a cast of 70 people, all drawn from the local community, and lasts one hour. A stand has been erected to accommodate the hundreds that come to experience it each year from all over Ireland. This year it takes place on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of Holy Week, March 25, 26 and 27.

Very many of the characters have been in the cast since the beginning in 1988 and make many sacrifices to ensure that they are available for the production. The lighting and sound effects are managed by a professional team who give their services freely, as do all the other people involved. It is a very moving drama and the local accents, natural settings, proximity of the players to the people, and the raw weather conditions make it a very authentic portrayal of “the greatest love story every told”.

There is no admission fee but donations are welcomed to cover expenses. And even though there is a stand that provides cover and seating, warm clothing is advised.
