Last year’s Christy Ring Cup winners will be calling into McHale Park for a visit on Sunday afternoon as Christy Phillips’ Mayo senior hurling side look to put together back to back wins. Mayo will go into Sunday’s game boosted on the back of impressive scoring haul of 4-16 in last weekend’s victory against Armagh in the same venue.
Sean Regan was the main man for Mayo last Saturday with an impressive personal tally of 2-6 over the 70 minutes. The James Stephens Ballina youngster is only in his first year out of minor and is already proving to be a handful for defences at this level. Kenny Feeney was once again the top marksman from placed balls, hitting seven points during the game, a couple of them in the first half were from back inside his own half. Mayo had to do it the hard way on Saturday too, losing Aiden Connolly to injury before the break and captain Derek McDonnell in the second half to a red card, they already had to do without the services of Keith Higgins and Cathal Freeman due to commitments with the senior footballers in the game after.
Mayo are currently sitting in third place in the table behind Sunday’s opponents who have two wins from their three games, beating Armagh and Down in their first and third games, with league leaders Meath beating them on a score of 2-17 to 1-11 in round two. London will be appearing at the top table of hurling this year thanks to winning last year’s Christy Ring Cup and opting to move up grades this year. The exiles will throw in on their campaign in the Lenister championship away to Carlow on Sunday May 19 in Dr Cullen Park. Their involvement in the chance to win the Liam McCarthy Cup shows the quality that Mayo will be facing on Sunday against their visitors. Mayo have one more game left in the league stages after Sunday’s game. They will make the long trip to Páirc Esler in Newry to take on Down on Sunday week, March 31.
Throw in for Sunday’s game in McHale Park which is the curtain-raiser for the footballers game against Donegal is at 12.45pm, and offers a great chance for the Mayo GAA supporters to get out and support the hurlers.
