Critically acclaimed documentary next on the screen for Westport Film Club Searching for Sugar Man, the Oscar-winning documentary, will screen in Westport Cineplex on Wednesday, April 3 at 8.45pm. Aspiring '70s folk rock musician Rodriguez never made it big. Despite critical praise, his albums bombed in the US, and he faded promptly into obscurity, leaving behind only urban legends of a gruesome onstage suicide. But somehow a bootleg copy of his album made its way to apartheid South Africa, where his antiestablishment message and distinctive sound resonated with the youth protest movement there, making Rodriguez an instant superstar. Decades later, two intrepid fans decide to investigate whatever happened to the mysterious rocker. While initially frustrated by a dearth of leads, they eventually trace his roots to 1970s Detroit and a producer named Mike Theodore, who drops a bombshell that completely changes the nature of their investigation.
Fund-raising social in Drum
A social will be held in Cormack's Pub, Drum on Easter Sunday night, March 31, with all proceeds going to a local family to cover medical expenses. Music will be provided by Impulse and there will be a raffle with great prizes on the night.
Male Voice Choir in Christ Church Castlebar
The Ballymena Seven Towers Male Voice Choir will be performing a fundraising concert in Christ Church of Ireland, Castlebar on Saturday, April 6. Fitzgerald exhibition in Westport
Custom House Studios at Westport Quay are holding an exhibition of drawings called The Celtic Zoo by Limerick sculptor Tom Fitzgerald. The exhibition will run every day until Sunday April 14.
The Celtic Zoo is a set of 24 mixed media drawings on paper. They are an attempt to document, in an absurd and satirical manner, the ineptitude, greed and corruption of recent years in Ireland, with particular reference to the Celtic Tiger period.
Ghost Trio hit the Linenhall
A musical treat of the highest order is on the cards when dazzling singer Iarla Ó Lionáird combines his glorious vocal talents with pioneering fiddle player Cleek Schrey and All-Ireland champion uilleann piper Ivan Goff at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Monday March 25 at 8pm.
There is no mistaking the sublime, utterly compelling vocal talents of Iarla Ó’Lionáird. One of the most ambitious recording artists in Ireland today, he has performed with groups as diverse as The Gloaming, Afro Celt Sound System, Gavin Bryars, Peter Gabriel, and The Crash Ensemble, while reimagining sean nós crooning in his solo albums, most recently in the critically acclaimed Foxlight. As Ghost Trio, Ó Lionáird is accompanied by Cleek Schrey’s unique fiddle playing, which fuses Irish stylings with the old-time music of Virginia. Sharing Ó Lionáird’s pioneering spirit, Schrey has collaborated in recent years with old time fiddler Stephanie Coleman, percussive dance phenomenon Nic Gareiss, and the viol consort Sonnambula. Completing the Ghost Trio line-up is All-Ireland champion piper and fellow New York resident Ivan Goff, who has performed in many theatrical productions as well as playing with Riverdance, Whirligig, Cathie Ryan, and Lúnasa. Put all three together and you can expect an atmospheric and unforgettable concert of the highest order.
Mayo girl into Teenstars final
Ballyheane NS pupil Erin Heneghan will be singing for glory in the Teenstars competition final in Clane, Co Kildare next week. The fifth class pupil has battled here way through to the final 32 of the 10 to 18 year old final of the competition. Starting off last August she has gone through three rounds of the competition to get to where she is now in the final on Sunday week, March 31.
Each contestant paid €20 to enter the competition and €5 from each entry will go to the chosen charity of the winner, Erin has chosen the Mayo-Roscommon Hospice as her charity of choice.
