A trainee mechanic was before Castlebar District Court on Wednesday. On November 8 2012, at 12.02am, Garda Shane O’Boyle stopped Conor Concannon, Cummer, Rehins, Castlebar, at a checkpoint at Moneen.
The defendant, who had a provisional licence, failed to produce his driving licence. The car had a large dark coloured Scania sticker, located about one foot down on the windscreen, which obstructed the driver’s view. The tread depth of the front right tyre was not to an acceptable level and the number plates on the back and front of the car had a black background and silver letters.
Tom Walsh, solicitor for the defendant, said that his client was insured at the time and the car is now off the road.
Judge Mary Devins asked the 19-year-old what the Scania sticker did for his “street cred”. The judge was told that the sticker was on the car when Concannon bought it.
The defendant has no previous convictions, however Mr Walsh told the court that the defendant is to appear before the court again in May in relation to other road traffic matters and asked if all matters could be dealt with together. Judge Devins adjourned the case to May 15.
