Woman before court for parking in disabled space

A Foxford woman was before Ballina District Court on Tuesday after she failed to pay a fine for parking in a disabled space in Ballina.

On June 3 2012 at 4.06pm, Garda Martin McNicholas observed a car parked in a disabled space in Market Square Car Park, Ballina. There was no disabled sticker displayed. A fine was issued to the owner of the car—Deirdre Ferguson, 14 Sliabh Rua, Foxford—but was not paid.

Judge Mary Devins asked why a young fit woman would park in a disabled space. “You realise what you did was wrong,” the judge said. The mother of two told the court that her mother, who has a disability sticker, is normally with her but on this occasion she was not. “I just didn’t think...it was unthoughtful of me.”

Judge Devins told Ferguson that she would disqualify her for a year or Ferguson is to come up with €500 which will be given to the Western Alzheimer’s Association. Ferguson said she would pay the money and was given to March 12 to pay.
