Woman tasered after she came at gardaí with glass bottle

A 35-year-old married mother of seven who produced a glass bottle in front of gardaí was before Ballina District Court on Tuesday.

Gardaí were called to Millview Crescent, Ballina, on June 3 2012 at 1am as two men were fighting. At the scene gardaí observed Bridget McDonagh, 58 Cluain na Ri, Ardnaree, Ballina, come out of a house at Millview. She shouted and roared at gardaí and picked up a glass bottle from the ground and attempted to break the bottle on the gable of the house. McDonagh was directed to drop the glass bottle however she went towards gardaí with it. She was asked a second time to drop the bottle but instead broke the bottle off a wall. The defendant was tasered by gardaí and was arrested. An ambulance was called as during the incident McDonagh cut herself with the bottle.

McDonagh, who has one previous conviction, is not a regular drinker, but had been at an engagement party and was intoxicated.

Judge Mary Devins said that McDonagh’s actions were “hardly edifying” and convicted and fined her €500.
