Breaffy gearing up for Diamond Gathering festivities

Breaffy GAA Club is getting set to launch details of its Diamond Gathering festivities due to take place from August 16 to 25.

The event will comprise the annual Breaffy Blast festival but will include an itinerary of celebrations that will incorporate participation from club members and activists, past and present.

The club is not ready to release the full calendar of events as confirmation has yet to be received from North American and UK football clubs about their participation. But anyone associated with the club is promised an action-packed programme.

To help organisers on their way the club would appreciate if anyone with photographs, press cuttings and memorabilia (including videos ) would lend them to the club to form part of the club's diamond jubilee celebrations.

St Michael's Club (the official title of Breaffy GAA Club ) was formed 60 years ago and this special celebration will be part of the Gathering event. It was in May 1953 that Breaffy played their first match against Aughagower in Breaffy in the west Mayo B junior championship. Sixty years later this diamond jubilee milestone is being celebrated. Festivities have already begun with the Cornmarket Challenge Cup involving the clubs' catchment area schools of Breaffy, Ballyheane, Derrywash, Errew and Scoil Raifteirí. This competition saw the Breaffy B team emerge victorious and lift the '53 Cup in honour of those who played for the club in its formative year.

All club memorabilia can be given to committee members, emailed to [email protected] or left in or posted to Diamond Gathering Committee, Breaffy GAA, Breaffy, Castlebar, Co Mayo. All items will be returned to owners.

As with all Gathering events, the invitation is all important so the club is urging anyone associated with its activities to extend an invitation to family and friends abroad.

A full calendar of events will be posted on www.breaffy.gaa.ie in due course.
