‘Grass’ found in a stone wall

A man who hid cannabis in a stone wall in rural Mayo was before Castlebar District Court this week.

Garda Tyrone Tobin told the court that on April 4 2012 gardaí received information that a plastic bag full of drugs was in a stone wall in Tooreen, Ballyhaunis, and a black Audi car visited the place where the wall was. Garda Tobin went to the location and hidden in the wall was a large plastic bag with three plastic bags in it containing cannabis. Surveillance of the wall was carried out and on April 6 2012 at 3.35pm Pawel Paczkowski, 32 The Maples, Ballyhaunis, removed one bag from the wall and placed it inside his jeans.

Gardaí who were at the scene approached him and the Polish man admitted that the drugs were for his own use. He hid the drugs there in case his house was searched.

He told gardaí that he had parties at his house and the drugs were given to his friends. Six of his friends had all contributed €100 to the purchase of the €600 worth of cannabis from a man in Galway.

The 34-year-old man, who is employed, has no previous convictions

Judge Mary Devins said that before sentencing she would like a probation report and remanded him on continuing bail to May 15.
