Magpies on the Pylon comes to GMIT Castlebar
A play written and performed by Michael Collins to raise awareness for the Samaritans and the National Suicide Programme will take be staged in St Mary’s Hall, GMIT Castlebar, next Thursday, February 28 at 7pm. The play is supported by GMIT Castlebar and Exchange House and is not suitable for children under 15 years or age.
Let it Roll at the Custom House
Custom House Studios in Westport are hosting a new exhibition called Let it Roll. The exhibition was launched last night Thursday February 21 at 7.30pm by Deirdre Garvey, Life Long Learning co-ordinator from GMIT. The exhibition is a touring exhibition of work created by Western Care service users and GMIT Castlebar Fine Art students to mark International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2012. The exhibition features work in a variety of media including glass, felt and paint.
Last week of Hall of Mirrors exhibition in Ballina
Anne Cleary and Dennis Connolly’s acclaimed exhibition Hall of Mirrors is entering its last week on show in the Ballina Civic Offices’ gallery space. The exhibition uses more than 50 electronic devices including Macs, PCs, Kinect cameras, video-stereoscopes, perception-headsets and a theremin. Created by an international team of artists and scientists, Hall of Mirrors is an exhibition that offers a deeply engaging, enjoyable, educational, exploratory, aesthetic experience to art lovers, science lovers, families, schools, and everybody else. Admission is free and the exhibition runs until, next Thursday February 28.
Tromluí Phinocchio/ Pinocchio – a Nightmare is coming to Belmullet
This show is a dark and sometimes disturbing story of a young boy’s journey through a dangerous adult world. Pinocchio is a young teenager; a wooden boy who doesn’t feel like he belongs. The show won the title of Best Irish Language Show of 2012 in The Irish Times and was also named one of the Top 10 Theatre Productions of 2012 by Entertainment.ie This Moonfish production will be in Aras Inis Gluaire, Belmullet at 8pm on Monday, March 18.
Tubbercurry Western Drama Festival turns 70
For the past 70 years, the community of Tubbercurry and its Western Drama Festival have provided the cream of drama talent to generations for over seven decades. Their outstanding contribution to amateur drama in Ireland will be acknowledged by none other than Druid Theatre founders Gary Hynes and actress Marie Mullen when they open their impressive 70th Anniversary festival on next Friday, March 1 in the historic St Brigid’s Hall. The 70th anniversary provides brilliant value season tickets for all nine night productions at €55. Samsara next up for Linenhall Film Club
The next screening at Linenhall Film Club is the unparalleled sensory experience and cinematographic phenomenon, Samsara. Described as a searching for the elusive current of interconnection that runs through our lives, Samsara is a new, non-verbal documentary from filmmakers Ron Fricke and Mark Magidson, An ‘audiovisual symphony’ filmed over a period of almost five years in 25 countries. By dispensing with dialogue and descriptive text, Samsara subverts any expectations of a traditional documentary, instead encouraging our own inner interpretations inspired by images and music that infuses the ancient with the modern.
