Meeting on bank debt

Clare Cullinane of Debtoptions Ireland will hold an information talk on Tuesday February 12 at 8pm in the Wyatt Hotel, Westport.

The talk will discuss the options the banks are not telling you. All are welcome, donation only.

Youth faith group

A new faith group for 16 to 35 year olds is now running in the Castlebar Parish Centre on Friday nights at 8pm.

Young adults are invited along for prayer and discussion on faith related matters with time for tea and a chat after with people of their own age. Further details from Claire 085 146 9088 or Mark 085 813 6835.

Celebrity sean nós

Oliver Kelleher, John Killkenny, Eunice Moran, Katherine Brennan, Willie Joe Padden, Kany Kazedi, and councillors Ger Deere and Therese Ruane are some of the participants in a celebrity sean nós dancing competition to be held in the Welcome Inn in Castlebar on Friday March 22. They are currently practising their steps under the guidance of Ireland’s number one sean nós teacher, Emma O’Sullivan.

All proceeds are going to help raise funds for the hosting of Fleadh Cheoil Chonnacht which will be held in Castlebar in 2014. The dancers, and their teams, are seeking sponsorship for their efforts and response so far has been very encouraging.

Claremorris FRC

Charlestown notes

The women’s group AGM takes place in the Charlestown Library and all members are requested to attend the meeting which is being held on February 19.

The next book club in meeting is in the library at 8pm on February 12.

Poetry for Patrick

Westport Town Council is inviting everyone in the Westport area to get involved in the St Patrick’s weekend festival 2013 – The Best Place to Gather. An extensive programme of music and cultural events is planned for the weekend. As a literary element Westport Town Council would like people to delve into their creative minds and write a poem during the month of February.

This is a celebration of Westport, St Patrick who spent more than 40 days in the locality, and The Gathering 2013. Therefore poems must include the words Patrick (or variation ), Gathering, and Westport.

The top 50 poems will be published in a booklet to be launched for St Patrick’s Day. Categories include junior primary and secondary schools, senior primary and secondary schools, and adults.

Well known Westport poet Ger Reidy will act as chairman of the judging panel. Entries to be submitted by email only to:[email protected]

Card drive

Cloonlyon Parents Association is running a 25 card drive every Friday night at 9pm in the Pastoral Centre, Charlestown. Admission is €5. Prizes galore.

Castlebar trialogue meeting

Trialogue is an open forum for discussion on mental health issues. The group meets on the second Tuesday of every month at 7pm in the Parish Centre, Castlebar, opposite the entrance to the church car-park.

Áras Inis Gluaire

Free creative writing workshops continue every second Monday, next session is on Monday February 11 from 7pm in Áras Inis Gluaire.

An exhibition of paintings by Mairead Laher will open in Áras Inis Gluaire tonight (February 8 ) at 7pm. The exhibition will be on show for the month of February.

Comhra Gaeilge has started in Áras Inis Gluaire on Tuesday evenings from 4.45pm to 6pm. This gives second level students a chance to improve on their spoken Irish or practice for the upcoming oral Irish exam. For information contact 097 81079.

Austerity day of action

ICTU protest march against austerity will take place in Galway on February 9 starting at 2pm, also in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Waterford, and Sligo.

Westport Bee Club

The February meeting takes place on Tuesday night February 5 at the Teagasc Centre, Newport Road, Westport, at 8pm. Anyone with an interest in keeping bees or wishing to join the beekeepers club is welcome.

Card Drive in Belmullet

A 25 card drive will take place in McDonnell’s Bar on Monday February 11 at 8pm.

€150 prize fund. There will be a raffle on the night for valuable prizes. Refreshments will be served. Admission €10. Proceeds to Cara Iorrais.

Castlebar GIY talk

The next GIY meeting will be held on Monday February 11 at 7.30pm in Le Cheile FRC, Tucker Street, Castlebar.

David Langford will give a talk: Facts, Figures, Fun, covering potatoes, biodiversity, and GM.

Running workshop

Do you want to be more competitive in running, duathlons, triathlons, and adventure racing? If so, the running school Castlebar is teaming up with top cycling coach Padraig Marrey to hold a workshop on February 9 at 9am (limited to 30 places ). The workshop will cover running and bike riding techniques, to increasing performance, developing speed, and reducing injuries. The venue will be at the Running School at the Sports Injuries and Sports Medicine Clinic, Unit 5c, N5 Business Park, Castlebar.

Gardening class

A five week gardening course will commence in Cúram Family Centre, Claremorris, on February 12 from 10am to 11.30am. Class will include information in garden planning, pots and containers, lawn care, hedges and trees, and preparing for summer. Booking is essential on 094 936 2096.

Newport Information Office

The office is looking for volunteers to work on a part-time basis over the summer months to man the office from 10am to 5pm. Volunteers will provide information and advice to visitors and will receive induction training. This is a great opportunity for anyone who wishes to develop their interest in tourism, customer service, or would like to promote their own area to tourists while meeting new and interesting people from all over the world.
