Long-established Galway-based computer-aided design software and training provider Amicus Technology is at the forefront of a revolution in the construction sector – building information modelling (BIM ). By integrating all stakeholders in the project throughout its lifecycle, from concept to building maintenance, BIM radically changes the traditional building process. For example all Government contracts in the UK must use BIM from 2016 and it is already in place in USA, Australia, Denmark, and other countries.
At the heart of BIM is a virtual 3D model (ie, an intelligent electronic copy of the project ). Mark Green, director at Amicus Technology, points out that BIM skills — particularly Autodesk Revit and Civil 3D — rather than CAD, are now the most valuable attribute for those seeking work in UK and elsewhere. Obtaining Autodesk Revit or Civil 3D certification is also becoming necessary for prequalification on projects.
While GMIT and other colleges include Autodesk Revit within their degrees, Amicus Technology provide a range of BIM short courses, from introductory (BIM for architects, structural or mechanical engineers ) through beginner (Revit Architecture or Civil 3D essentials ) to advanced (Revit families, advanced, Structure, MEP ) alongside AutoCAD, GIS (MAP 3D ), road and site design (Civil 3D ) and visualisation (3ds Max ).
Jobseekers or part-time employees may be eligible for TESG funding for these courses. Contact your local DSP office for details.
