Potential changes at the top table of Mayo GAA

Mayo GAA could be on the lookout for a new county secretary this morning. At an executive meeting last night it was expected that current county secretary, Kevin O’Toole, would have offered his resignation from the role to the executive. The Tourmakeady clubman who took over the position at the 2011 convention from Séan Feeney had previously served in a number of roles including PRO for the county board. O’Toole had been one of the driving factors behind the Cáirde Mhaigheo season ticket and supporters club which has been a big success since its inception last year.

However it was expected that the other members of the executive would try to get him to reconsider his decision.

O’Toole spoke to the Mayo Advertiser on Wednesday morning and said: “For personal and family reasons, I’ve decided to step down from the role.” A spokesperson for the Mayo County Board told the Mayo Advertiser on Thursday afternoon that they were aware that this issue may come up [at last night’s meeting], but they had not met with him on the matter. He went on to say that they hoped to persuade him to change his mind: “We will be looking to do what we can and for what is in the best interest of Mayo and get him to stay on in the role of secretary.” With Mayo GAA about to appoint an administrator, it would take some of the work load off the secretary position. If O’Toole does step down, assistant secretary Vincent Neary would probably step up in an acting role until an EGM was convened to elect a new secretary
