CCTV application for Westport submitted to Garda HQ

An application for CCTV for Westport has been forwarded to Garda Headquarters. According to Superintendent Aiden Foley the application has been sent and he hopes to be called to present to the Garda CCTV committee at the next quarterly meeting. However, the superintendent could not give the town’s JPC meeting a date when CCTV would be up and running.

Cathaoirleach Councillor Ollie Gannon said that €45,000 has been set aside by the town council to fund the CCTV system—€25,000 in this year’s budget and €20,000 from last year’s budget. Town clerk, Ann Moore said that due to the extra funding from this year’s budget that additional locations will be looked at for the installation of the cameras which will be discussed with the CCTV committee.

Cllr Gannon said that elected members of the town council have been approached by people who have reservations about CCTV, however he said that it should not be looked upon as being a negative for the town as CCTV is for everyone’s safety and CCTV will “help keep Westport as a primary tourist destination”.
