Pub served underage girl

A pub in Shrule is to be closed for 48 hours after the previous licensee was convicted for allowing a 16-year-old to consume intoxicating liquor in the pub.

Garda Aidan Connaughton inspected The Shawl, Main Street, Shrule on March 17 2012 at 5pm. The bar was then run by Beaghmore Investments Limited, with the director being Mr McCabe.

Garda Connaughton said that there was a large crowd of young people in the pub, who were over 16, but were not drinking alcohol. One girl was drinking vodka and coke and she was asked to produce ID. She produced a driving licence however the garda did not believe it was her. She admitted that she borrowed it from a friend and she had used the ID to buy alcohol from the bar. She was only 16 years old. The person working in the bar admitted that she served her in good faith when the ID was produced.

The court heard that the pub, which is a well run public house, is no longer run by the director of Beaghmore Investments Limited.

Judge Mary Devins convicted and fined the company €500 for permitting a child to consume alcohol. The judge directed the mandatory closure of the premises for 48 hours. The Shawl will close on March 6 and 7.
