State Solicitor, Vincent Deane said that there is a “‘disproportionate amount” of ESB prosecutions in the county in comparison to other districts in relation to the tampering of ESB meters.
Mr Deane’s comments were made at Ballina District Court this week as he gave evidence against John Paul Collins, 51 Moy Heights, Ballina.
He outlined that an ESB network technician called to then home of Collins, at 27 Bunree Road, Ballina on November 14 2011 where it was observed that the meter had a hole in it and an item was placed inside which prevented the meter from reading electricity used. The meter was exchanged at a cost of €192, which was not paid by Collins. The undercharge of electricity was €89.
Solicitor, Peter Loftus said that his client accepts that he needs to pay the money owed and asked for time to pay.
Judge Mary Devins said that these type of prosecutions seem to be coming into court more often. Mr Deane said that there seems to be a “disproportionate amount” in this district. Mr Deane said that the ESB is enforcing matters to highlight the safety aspect. Judge Devins asked whether anyone had been electrocuted, however Mr Deane said that he did not know. Judge Devins said she hoped it would “not end in a tragedy” in order for people to stop.
The case was adjourned to July 23 for payment of money owed by Collins.
