Woman went ‘Christmas shoplifting’

A married mother of one who travelled to Ballina for some “Christmas shoplifting” was before Ballina District Court this week.

Garda Noel Crinnegan was called to Penney’s, Ballina on December 18 202 after security stopped two women who stole from the shop. Three women had entered the store and between them took €400 worth of clothing, however only two were detained by security. Rita Briody, 21 Dun Darragh, Dublin Road, Longford had €100 worth of stock in her red handbag. All items were recovered.

The court heard that the 25-year-old was driven to Ballina and brought along by friends to the shop. The defendant told the court that she came to Ballina for a bit of Christmas shopping. Judge Mary Devins asked her if it was for a bit of “Christmas shoplifting”, to which Briody replied “ya”.

Briody has no previous convictions.

Judge Devins directed that the defendant pay €50 to the St Vincent de Paul and applied the Probation Act
