Tomorrow morning, Saturday, January 12 from 11am to 1pm, the Mayo Genealogy Group will be holding its drop-in group.
If you have an interest in finding out about your family history go along for free practical tips with the Mayo Genealogy Group. No booking is required and new researchers are welcome.
On Sunday January 13 from 3pm to 4pm a gallery tour will be taking place, this free family tour will guide you through all the exhibitions in the museum and is on a first come, first served basis.
On Saturday week, January 19, Stanley Kubrick’s film Barry Lyndon will be shown in the museum. This 1975 period film by Kubrick recounts the exploits of an unscrupulous 18th century Irish adventurer. It will start at 12 noon, no booking is required.
Also currently on exhibition in the museum is The Irish Headhunter, Searching for the Irish Race. This is an exhibition of 63 photographs from around the west coast of Ireland in the 1890s. This exhibition focuses on the photographs of Charles R Browne, a medical doctor and anthropologist who undertook physical surveys of people for Trinity College, Dublin. These surveys were mainly carried out in west Kerry, the Aran Islands, south Connemara, Erris, Clare Island, and Inishturk in Mayo. The photographs are full of human interest and also convey a lot of detail about the clothes worn at the time. The exhibition will be supplemented by information on the international context of eugenics at the time. The exhibition runs until June 2013.
