A 39-year-old man was before Castlebar District Court this week where he admitted breaking into a Jeep parked outside the cinema in Castlebar and stealing a child’s wallet.
A witness rang gardaí at 9.35pm on October 29 2012 after he observed two people act suspiciously near vehicles parked at the cinema in Moneen. The witness updated gardaí that a vehicle had been broken into and a person fled to a nearby apartment. This defendant was Colm Maughan, Apt 1, The Diner, Moneen.
Maughan smashed the window of a Jeep causing €200 worth of damage and stole a wallet worth €10 which had €10 inside.
The defendant admitted he took the wallet which was not recovered.
Maughan has 24 previous convictions.
For the criminal damage Judge Denis McLoughlin convicted and sentenced him to six months in prison, suspended for 12 months.
For the theft charge he was remanded on bail to court on February 20 for €220 in compensation to have been paid to the injured party. Judge McLoughlin said that if the compensation is paid he will deal with it by way of a €100 fine.
