A 23-year-old man who was observed to be threatening and abusive on a Castlebar street as he attempted to fight a man was before Castlebar District Court this week.
Denis Ahern, 72 Springfield Court, Castlebar, was observed on January 1 2013 at 2.45am act in an agitated manner on New Antrim Street.
A garda who approached him observed that he had a set of broken rosary beads in his hand and was trying to fight another male saying, “I’ll f*****g get you”.
The defendant, who was intoxicated, was asked to calm down and leave the area, however when the garda returned a few minutes later Ahern was back in the vicinity and was trying to hit another man.
Ahern made derogatory comments to gardaí and violently resisted arrest. There was a large crowd in the area at the time.
The defendant, who is a qualified fitness instructor, is currently unemployed, but may have an opportunity to commence work as a sports development officer.
Judge Denis McLoughlin directed that Ahern contribute €500 to the Garda Benevolent Fund and come to no further Garda attention. The matter was adjourned to March 20.
