Funding of €254,400 for community organisations in Mayo

Fine Gael TD for Mayo, Michelle Mulherin, has confirmed that a number of community and voluntary groups in Mayo have benefited from fresh funding awarded by the Department of Health from the Department’s National Lottery Fund.

Deputy Mulherin said: “I am delighted to have confirmation from the Minister for Health, Dr James Reilly, that his Department has awarded funding totalling €254,400 to eight community and voluntary groups in Mayo. The successful groups in this latest round of funding are: Lecanvey Community Centre, Western Alzheimer's - West of Ireland Alzheimer Foundation, Ballindine-Irishtown Active Retirement Association, Crossmolina Community Council, Claremorris Family Resource Centre, Western Care Association, and Moy Valley Community Services Ltd.”

Dep Mulherin continued: “Despite the excellent work that is done by volunteer members, community and voluntary organisations find themselves under huge financial pressure due to the substantial cost of providing their services. There is a need for proper, safe, high quality facilities and equipment that are of a standard to perform the tasks being carried out and that meet the needs of the users. These grants make a huge difference to local groups that provide truly worthwhile support and services to communities across Mayo.”

By the end of 2012, the Department of Health National Lottery Fund will have allocated more than €3 million to good causes nationally. These awards are recognition of the contribution that the voluntary sector makes to the care, support, and welfare of people at a local level.

“In my role as an elected representative I meet many volunteers who are giving their time to help out in their communities. I am humbled by their efforts and enthusiasm,” continued Dep Mulherin.

“I have made representations to Minister Reilly on behalf of a number of applicants and I welcome his decision. This money will make a huge difference to the successful organisations and I know it will be well spent. I would like to congratulate all of the successful organisations and to thank their members and supporters for the excellent work they do.”
