Derelict: Silent and Still—a poignant look at abandoned houses

Derelict: Silent and Still is a new exhibition opening at Ballina Arts Centre for the month of December. These photographs of abandoned houses taken throughout the Celtic Tiger era in Mayo, which are full of rich colour and evoke strong images of decay and isolation, speak of a visual language a lot of rural Irish people of a certain age will be all too familiar with.

The exhibition illustrates the architecture of abandonment, finding structure in the chaos and respecting the dignified silence that pervades these often abused, abandoned structures.

Derelict: Silent and Still will be officially opened by Patrick T Murphy, Director of the RHA, on Friday December 5 at 8pm and runs until December 23. Admission is free and all are welcome.

Ballina Arts Centre is located on Barrett Street, Ballina. Call 096 73593; email: [email protected] or look at www.ballinaartscentre.com Opening hours are Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm and Saturday from 10am to 3pm.
