Mayo look for four in a row

Ballaghaderreen's famous four on the handball court will go looking for their fourth consecutive 40 x 20 Open All Ireland club championship this weekend.

The Mayo men will take on the best of Ulster in the final in Abbeylara on Saturday when they line up against Antrim's Gort na Móna club in the final. The Mayo side comprises Dessie Keegan and Joe McCann in the singles competition with Vinnie Moran and Stephen Cooney lining up in the doubles competition.

In a rematch of last year’s final the Mayo foursome will be in for a tough encounter against a Gort na Móna side who overcame a fancied Meath side in the semi-final to take on the Mayo boys in the final. In last year’s final Keegan saw off Ricky McCann in the first game in a thriller by 21-20 and both men will more than likely face off again on Saturday in Longford. The doubles competition will more than likely see Moran and Cooney for Mayo face off against the talented Ulster pair of John McGarry and Eddie Mallon.

For Mayo, McCann and Keegan have been operating out of the higher levels of the game for the past number of years and big performances will be needed from them on Saturday if Mayo are to bring home the title to the border town. The first game will get under way at 3pm in the Longford town.
