A man was before Ballina District Court this week for the possession of €12 worth of cannabis.
Detective Garda Sinead Caheny searched the home of Robert McGinty, 69 Cluain na Ri, Ballina on March 16 2012.
A small amount of cannabis was discovered and McGinty told gardaí that it was his.
The court head that the defendant has no previous convictions for drugs but has 15 other convictions. Detective Caheny said that McGinty “was an awful man for the drink” but not been in trouble since he has started to seemingly use cannabis.
Judge Mary Devins said that it was “interesting” that McGinty recorded a lot of serious convictions when drinking but when he uses cannabis it appears to be “preventing his reoffending in a serious way”.
The judge adjourned the case for sentencing to June 25 2013.
