Superintendent of Westport Aiden Foley stated at the town’s JPC meeting on Monday that there has not been an increase of break-ins in Westport town during 2012; in fact the number of break-ins in the town is down on the number of burglaries in 2011. The superintendent did, however, clarify that there has been a marginal increase in burglaries in the Westport district.
Supt Foley said that in other areas “there has been a huge increase in burglaries, but thankfully not in Westport”.
The superintendent said that the gardaí are doing everything they can to deal with such incidents and are trying to charge and bring people before the courts “at the earliest opportunity”.
Supt Foley said that burglaries in Westport are committed by those living in the area and also by people coming into the area. He added that “a number of initiatives have been put in place” including local gardaí being upskilled in crime investigation.
Finally, the superintendent asked that the public are extra vigilant between now and Christmas and if they spot any strange people or cars in their neighbourhoods that they contact the local garda station and report such sightings.
