Westport man challenging Household Charge

A Westport man is challenging the constitutionality of the Household Charge.

Peter Anthony Keegan, Belclare, Westport, has initiated legal proceedings in the High Court claiming that the Household Charge is unconstitutional. Environment Minister Phil Hogan, among others, has been issued with a summons in relation to the matter.

Mr Keegan was the first person in the country to be before the district court in relation to the non payment of the charge. Six summonses were issued by Mayo County Council against Mr Keegan for not making a declaration of the household charge in relation to six units in Westport. Mr Keegan’s case, along with other property owners in the county who have been issued with summonses, has been adjourned to Westport District Court on December 20 .
