Upstart - celebrating the International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Mayo County Council Arts Service has been leading, supporting, and developing arts and disability programmes throughout the county and it initiated a support scheme through International Day of Persons with Disabilities three years ago. This scheme, now entitled Upstart, provides support for arts projects/events in Mayo, designed to provide a quality arts experience for people with disabilities in their own locality.

Custom House Studios, Westport, and Carrowbeg Enterprises, Westport, are delighted to be marking International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2012 by collaborating on an open studio/public access event.

The aim of the event is to provide opportunities for participants to work in an integrated atmosphere and environment with members of the general public.

In 2011 Custom House Studios operated a very successful visual arts workshop programme which involved six participants from Carrowbeg Enterprises meeting each week. The workshops were facilitated by artist Grainne O’Reilly, with assistance from Caroline Masterson. The workshops focused on giving encouragement and support for participants to develop their own expression and imagery through assistance in use of different techniques. The workshops culminated in an exhibition of the participants’ works in the main downstairs gallery of Custom House Studios which ran from January 26 to February 19 2012.

This year, participants will demonstrate their skills and techniques by working alongside members of the general public in a day long informal workshop. The event will take place at Custom House Studios, The Quay, Westport, on Monday, December 3 starting at 11am and continuing throughout the day.

This is an opportunity for members of the public to attend the print studio and engage in printmaking along with participants.
