A man who collided with a car on a roundabout was before Ballina District Court this week.
Gardaí were called to a collision on November 16 2011 at 8.50pm at the Circular Road Roundabout, Ballina.
A woman at the scene said that a car collided into the passenger door of her car while she was manoeuvring around the roundabout and then left the scene. The driver took down the registration number.
Gardaí came across the car on November 18 and stopped the driver, who was Jacek Lech, 52 Woodland, Killala Road, Ballina.
The 35-year-old Polish man who has been in Ireland for seven years, is unemployed. The court heard that the defendant badly anticipated the exit of the car from the roundabout and hit it and left as he panicked.
Inspector Michael O’Dwyer said that the charge of dangerous driving could be withdrawn and instead he be charged the lesser charge of careless driving. A charge in relating to the hit and run was also withdrawn.
Judge Mary Devins said that she would strike out the careless driving charge altogether as she is “less than impressed with the prosecutions attitude”, or would convict for dangerous driving. The case was adjourned to December 11.
