Preparations are well under way at Balla Secondary School for this year's musical which premieres on December 6 and 7. The school has always prided itself on its inclusive spirit and this year has decided to forgo a single musical show to instead present a selection of numbers from some well-loved shows such as Grease, Oliver, and Annie.
“Normally, a school musical allows a small number of students to showcase their talents,” principal Mary Reaney explained. “However, we really felt this year we wanted to get as many students as possible involved. The experience of stepping out on stage is a valuable experience, one that breeds self-confidence and esteem, and we have always prided ourselves in this school on encouraging students to partake in the annual show. Coupled with the fact that there is a depth of musical talent in the school as evident in the large number of students who sing in the choir and take music as a subject to Leaving Cert we have decided to work with different year groups performing a selection from some well-loved musicals.”
The musical extravaganza will see first and second year students perform numbers from Oliver and Annie, while transition years and fifth years will perform Grease.
Much of the work is being done in-house with the art and woodwork departments busy with preparations, while Sarah Heneghan is coaching the vocalists. The school has also enlisted professional producer Ronan Lardner and choreographer Sandra Sheehy to ensure that audiences enjoy a show of the highest quality.
