Individual performances honoured with Advertiser-Mayo League teams of the year

It is a case of six of the best for Westport United in the Mayo Advertiser sponsored Mayo League Super League team of the year. The run-away Super League champions have half a dozen players picked in the 4-3-3 formation team of the season. Gary Cunningham gets the nod in goal with Martin Geraghty and Shaun Tagg the centre back pairing. In the middle of the park David Cameron is one of three midfielders with both JP O’Gorman and David Hoban making up two thirds of the strike force. Both Claremorris and Ballina Town have received two nods, with full back pairing of James Stretton and Andrew Shally claiming the awards for the south Mayo men. Michael Duffy earned a spot in the midfield three with Brendan Lavelle picking up his award in the front line. The last spot on the team went to Castlebar Celtic’s Ger O’Boyle whose good form saw him called up to the Irish junior side, before cruelly picking up an injury just before the game.

In the Premier A team, champions Ballyheane picked up five awards to go with their winners’ medals. The Premier A team was a 4-4-2 line up with Paddy Burke and Padraig Mulroe lining out in the back four for the Hane. It was three out of four for the Quigley Park side in the midfield with Robert Fadden, John Kelly, and Chris Maughan selected there.

Snugboro United were rewarded for their promotion push with three selections, Kevin Stenston was picked between the posts, with Kenneth Guthrie getting a full back slot and Sean Curry taking one of the striking positions. Conn Rangers who were in the promotion hunt right until the final day of the season have picked up two awards, with Owen McNamara picking up a centre half award and Brian Hughes one in the middle of the park. The final spot on the team has gone to Castlebar Celtic B striker Terry Maughan for his goal scoring exploits over the season.

Villa top of the picks in Premier B

Moy Villa picked up five slots in the Premier B team of the year, with Kevin Langdon and Daniel Melia in the back four selection, Mark Moyles got the nod in centre of midfield, while it is a ‘double top’ for Moy Villa up front with both John Durcan and John Casey getting the strikers’ berths. Charlestown Athletic have the next highest representation with the trio of Noel Gavaghan, Tom Towey, and Thomas Meehan all getting the nod. Westport United B got two places in the 11 with Michael Gibbons given the number one shirt and Padraic Folan selected out on the wing. The final place goes to Ballyglass’s Matthew Hamilton in the middle of the park.

Only three teams make up the entire best 11 in the League One team of the year, with Urlar United providing five players, Partry Athletic four players, and Ballyhaunis Town two. The five Urlar United players are Declan Horkan, Tim Moriarty, Oisin Horan, Keith Robinson, and Martin Conlon. The Partry Athletic foursome is made up of Sean Og Burke, James Colfer, Paul McAlpine, and Ciaran Hennelly. The final two spots on the side go to the Ballyhaunis Town pair of Fergus Coyne and Conor Freeley. For the League Two team of the year the selectors went for a 3-4-3 formation, with Kiltimagh/Knock United the big winners, taking home five awards. Barry O’Donnell, JoJo Glynn, Andy Leadbetter, Gavin Groarke, and Conor Groarke were the five men from Kiltimagh/Knock United to get the nod. Conn Rangers B saw Gerard Bourke and James O’Neill pick up two awards for their side, Moy Villa B also picked up two spots in the side with Jason Gilmartin and Martin Kielty both picked in the midfield four. The final two awards went to Paul Walsh, getting the nod in goal for his displays for Fahy Rovers B, and Hollister’s Chris Cunningham selected at full back. The award winners will be presented with their awards at the Mayo League dinner dance and presentation night which will take place on Friday November 23 at 8.30pm in the Welcome Inn Hotel, Castlebar.
