As part of the Garda Supporting Safer Communities Campaign 2012, An Garda Síochána in Mayo is taking a proactive approach regarding crime prevention and is holding a home security exhibition on Saturday November 24 at The Park Hotel, Kiltimagh, from 10am to 5pm. Entry is free and John O’Mahoney TD will be opening the exhibition.
Superintendent Colm Fox of Swinford Garda Station explained: “There will be a number of security experts and companies that specialise in home security systems present on the day. We also expect to be in a position to carry out a limited engraving service. Therefore, we encourage any person with portable bulky items such as bicycles to bring them along on the day for engraving.’’
In 2011, there were 27,439 burglaries and related incidents nationwide. Thirty per cent of these burglaries occurred through the front door, making this point of entry the most common. Almost 25 per cent of these burglaries took place during the day, between 12 noon and 4pm. There is a home security checklist challenge available on the Garda website at www.garda.ie with some simple but effective burglary prevention advice.
The Park Hotel, Kiltimagh, will be doing a special rate hot lunch with tea/coffee for €9 and chantilly scones with tea/coffee for €3. Any proceeds made on the day will go directly towards Mayo/Roscommon Hospice.
