March Away My Brothers

The Mayo Peace Park committee will host the highly recommended period play March Away My Brothers at the Linenhall Theatre, Castlebar on Thursday November 22.

Written and performed by Brendan McQuaile, it follows the journey of a young man named Laurence Kelly, from Bridgefoot Street, in Dublin’s Liberties, up to the Christmas truce in 1914. The title is taken from the poem written in 1922 by George Chesterton Duggan, in memory of his brothers George and Jack who were killed on the same day in August of 1915, near Suvla Bay, on the Turkish peninsula. The play and the poem itself help one to understand the role that music played in the lives of troops out on the front lines. Many of the popular songs of the time are included as an integral part of this unusual and entertaining play.
