Councillors hit out at failure of Achill Bridge again

The failure of the Achill Bridge to close on Monday morning caused a serious inconvenience for people on the island who were stuck and not able to get on or off the island for up to an hour and a half.

Achill based county councillor Michéal McNamara raised the issue before the start of the November meeting of Mayo County Council on Monday. “My phone has been ringing off the hook all day. This is not good enough. All we want is a bridge that will work, this is a new bridge that cost a lot of money. I want a full report on this as soon as possible.”

Sinn Féin councillor Rose Conway Walsh also spoke out about the incident saying that she also got a large number of calls about it and that the councillors were given assurances that the bridge was finally fixed after the last long running problem with it had been dealt with a few months ago.

County manager Peter Hynes told the meeting that he would like to apologise to the people who were affected because of the problem, and that it was “regrettable and not acceptable”. He also endeavoured to have a report as soon as possible for the members.
