Children's rights matter — Cllr Ruane

Councillor Thérèse Ruane said that Sinn Féin is calling for a Yes vote in the upcoming Referendum which will take place on Saturday November 10.

The councillor said: “The issue of children’s rights, and putting them into the Constitution, has long been a Sinn Féin policy. Enshrining children’s rights, as proposed, will ensure that the best interests of the child will be taken into account, as the most important thing, in matters concerning their safety, welfare, and guardianship. While it may not be the exact wording Sinn Féin would have proposed it is an important step forward that can be built on.”

Cllr Ruane said: “This wording will give children specific rights to care and well-being, as well as the right to be heard in certain matters concerning them. The State will have both the duty and the power to intervene on behalf of all children at risk, regardless of whether their parents are married or not.

“This amendment is good for children. I'm asking each and every one of you to go out and vote Yes on November 10. Children’s rights matter.”
