It is believed that one person in 10 will be affected by depression at some point in their lives.
On Friday October 26, the students of Presentation College Headford are attempting to create a new world record while fundraising for the charity Aware.
The Transition Year students are hoping that all 788 students and 60 staff members will assemble on the school green, creating the shape of the Aware logo.
The organising students hope that it will be a fun-filled event but are keen to emphasise a serious message: that depression can happen to anyone at any time. Aware is a national organisation providing help for those affected by depression and suicide and support for their families and friends.
A poster campaign is also underway in the school making students aware of depression and providing helpline numbers to remind everyone that they are not alone.
Dr James Whyte, the school principal, stated: “The ‘Are You Aware?’ campaign is an exciting and very worthwhile initiative involving the whole school. I commend our students and their teachers for envisioning, organising and undertaking this project which will promote awareness of mental health issues in PCH and in the wider community.”
