A three-metre wide trail joining the Lough Lannagh walk in Castlebar with Islandeady has been identified. The proposal to develop this linear trail, which will eventually connect with the Westport national cycle network, has been welcomed by Labour councillor Harry Barrett.
The proposed walk will serve tourist, local, recreational, work and travel needs.
According to Cllr Barrett the plan presents the opportunity to link many of the walking trails that currently exist and to support and expand tourism potential, while at the same time maximising the existing lakeside amenities at Lough Lannagh and providing a valuable eventual connection with Westport national cycle network and the Great Western Greenway.
“I had been calling for a route to be identified to link Castlebar and Islandeady,” said Cllr Barrett. “This preferred route identified now is to establish a trail to skirt along the edge of Lough Lannagh and Islandeady Lough.The development will be subject to local landowner consensus by way of permissive access. It is proposed to develop a dedicated three metre wide path for the purpose of both walking and cycling.
“I will continue to support this project for as long as I am a councillor on Castlebar Town Council, and I will work with colleagues to ensure that it compliments the fantastic work that we have done down at Lough Lannagh, work that will benefit the people of the town for years to come.”
