Marriage equality for all—Ruane

Sinn Féin councillor Thérèse Ruane will bring a motion on the issue of marriage equality before the next meeting of Castlebar Town Council. The motion calls for the same rights and entitlements for civil marriage for all citizens regardless of race, religion or sexuality and this viewpoint to be communicated to the Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence.

Councillor Ruane said: “Sinn Féin as a party promotes equality for all. The issue of marriage equality for same sex couples is gaining more attention here in Ireland and worldwide. It’s a positive step that councils the length and breadth of this island have passed motions supporting civil marriage for gay and lesbian couples. A red C Poll in February of this year, showed that 73 per cent of people are in favour of marriage equality.”

Cllr Ruane said that she hoped her Castlebar Town Council colleagues will support this motion. “The time for marriage equality is now."
