Charges struck out for serial theft offender

A woman from Scotland, whom Superintendent Joe Doherty described as “an absolute scourge” to society, had four theft charges struck out at this week’s sitting of Ballina District Court.

At Castlebar District Court on September 19, Margaret Horne, 15 St Muredach’s Terrace, Ballina, gave an undertaking to return back to her native Scotland on or before October 20 as she is being a “nuisance” to shop owners and gardaí, as she is constantly before court on theft charges.

At Ballina District Court on Tuesday it was outlined that Horne was arrested in Ballina on September 26 in relation to four alleged thefts that day from a chemists, a shop, the Department of Social Protection, and the post office.

After being arrested and charged Horne was given station bail. Horne did not turn up in court on Tuesday. Judge Mary Devins said that as the defendant was given bail, a bench warrant would not be issued. The charges were struck out.
