Members of Westport’s Joint Policing Committee backed a motion proposed by Councillor Myles Staunton that Westport Courthouse should not close.
Cllr Staunton said the courthouse is one listed by the courts service to be assessed whether it should remain open. The councillor said that a motion not to close the courthouse should be made to the courts service.
Councillors Christy Hyland, Martin Keane, and Ollie Gannon agreed that the courthouse should not close.
Superintendent Aiden Foley said he is aware of the possibility that the courthouse might close, however he said the community could be assured that it could not impact on the administration of justice if the closure went ahead.
