An Taoiseach to make special delivery to Castlebar primary school

An Taoiseach Enda Kenny will be making a special delivery of high viz vests to junior infants in St Peter’s National School, Snugborough, Co Mayo, next Monday, October 8 at 9.15am.

This marks the first day of Irish Road Safety Week which is taking place from Monday October 8 to Sunday October 14. The high vis vests are being delivered to every child starting school this year as part of a Road Safety Authority (RSA ) and Electric Ireland campaign.

Recent research from the RSA has revealed that more than half (56 per cent ) of all child casualties in Ireland between 1997 and 2010 were pedestrians or cyclists. In light of this, the RSA and Electric Ireland are teaming up for the third year running to distribute more than 85,500 hi viz vests to every child starting school this year. Since the beginning of this campaign, some quarter of a million hi vis vests have been provided to schoolchildren. The hi vis vests will help to ensure that our youngest and most vulnerable road-users are clearly seen by other road users when walking or cycling to school.

In attendance at the event will be An Taoiseach Enda Kenny; Noel Brett, chief executive of the Road Safety Authority; and Brid Horan, ESB Services and Electric Ireland.
