Keelogues woman to run New York marathon for Mayo Rape Crisis Centre

Trish Reddington from Keelogues, Castlebar, will be running in the New York City Marathon, the biggest race in the world, on November 4 to raise funds for Mayo Rape Crisis Centre. Trish, a former Mayo county footballer took up running while living in New York City. A member of New York Road Runners Club until she moved home in October 2011, Trish only began running in 2008. She has since completed six half marathons and two Olympic size New York City triathlons in 2009 and 2010, where she helped raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of New York City.

A former bartender at PJ Carney’s on 57th Street, Trish was fortunate to have the New York City Athletic Club across the street, where she trained for many of her events. Trish loves a challenge and is very much looking forward to returning to her former home to take part in one of the greatest races in the world.

Since 1978, New York City marathon runners have started their 26.2 mile journey on the Staten Island side of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, and this is where all 47,000 plus runners will gather this year: in a parking lot and field inside Fort Wadsworth.

Currently Trish is training on the roads of Mayo, getting ready with daily training. She is running an average 20 miles a week, tonight she will be out running 10 miles. As she has said she is not keeping to an exact timetable, it is important to listen to the body and rest also. Mayo Rape Crisis Centre is delighted that Trish has chosen to help boost its funds by running this marathon and wishes her all the best with her training and with this venture.

The Mayo Rape Crisis Centre is centrally located in the county town with outreach services in Ballina, Belmullet, and Ballyhaunis.
