Westport town councillor Christy Hyland has hit out at how the council is dealing with antisocial behaviour in local authority houses in the town. At the town council meeting last Thursday, Cllr Hyland said: ‘This is my fifth time bringing up anti-social behaviour.”
The Fine Gael councillor said that people are coming to him saying that they “can’t get a wink of sleep at night” due to ongoing antisocial behaviour. Cllr Hyland said “this mayhem is going on at 4am and 5am”, “it’s not fair”, and he said the people causing the disturbance should be put out.
Town manager Martin Keating said that every such complaint has been investigated and he has met with the individuals concerned and community representatives and has also met with the local Superintendent, and “I am satisfied that the appropriate measures are being taken.”
Cathaoirleach of the council, Cllr Ollie Gannon, said that all members concur that it is unbearable for law abiding citizens to put up with this type of behaviour.
