Council to give €100,000 towards Westport United development

Westport Town Council is to provide €100,000 in funding towards the Westport United Community Development Ltd.

Town manager Martin Keating said that this will be financed over three to four years in the annual town council’s budget. Cathaoirleach of the town council, Councillor Ollie Gannon, proposed the funding, which was seconded by Cllr Michael McLaughlin. Cllr McLaughlin said that this is a “worthy investment for this town council” and added that it is “a facility which is long overdue”.

Earlier in the meeting a presentation was given to councillors by representatives from Westport United about the proposed development, which will be located off the Golf Course Road. The development will include two international standard pitches, an all weather facility, a training area, and club building.

According to Danny McLaughlin, chairman of the finance committee for the club, the first phase of the development will cost €850,000, with this phase being competed in the next two years. Mr McLaughlin said that although there is €750,000 of finance available for this development there is a shortfall of €100,000 towards the project and local donations of €5 a week are being sought. Already 260 people have signed up for the standing order scheme. Those interested in contributing can find out more information on www.westportunited.com
