There was welcome news for Mayo this week with the announcement that Eircom is to roll out its fibre plan across the county’s three biggest towns.
Ballina, Castlebar, and Westport will benefit from phase three of the Fibre Rollout Plan.
The news was welcomed by Deputy John O’Mahony, vice chairman of the Joint Committee on Transport and Communication, who said: “It’s widely accepted now that the provision of broadband is a vital part of the infrastructure of any community in the same way that transport and the road network is. My hope would be that when Eircom have completed these town sections that they will look at other areas in the county to start work on.”
Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring has also welcomed the announcement saying it was an issue which he raised with Eircom on a number of occasions in the past year.
According to Minister Ring: “Phase three includes 13 communities in eight counties across the country that will be part of this Fibre Rollout Plan.”
Work is expected to commence this winter with the aim to complete the construction phase by Easter 2013.
