Winter competitions in full swing around Mayo

Castlebar

Eugene McCormack’s team was the winner of the third round of the Cox’s winter league in harsh conditions last weekend. He came home with a score of 76, which was the same as the second place team captained by Lorcan Cribben. Jim O’Sullivan’s team took third spot with a score of 75 while Mick O’Malley’s team came home in fourth with a score of 74. The postponed round of the competition will be played on December 13 and 14 and the Garda Hamper competition will take place on December 6 and 7.

Castlebar seniors

Seamus Flynn won the November 21 competition with Angus Ryan coming home in second place and Tony Finnerty taking third spot. Anglea Colgan was the overall winner of the ladies’ section of the competition.

Balla

The Stableford competition held on November 23 was won by Kevin Reilly with a score of 35, Stephen Costello came second with a 32 on the back nine and Michael Gannon came third with a 32. The ladies’ competition was won by Mary Brett with a 31, Nora Heraty came second on 30 and Geraldine O’Malley took third place with a 29. The presentation of prizes including golfer of the year, Broderick Cup and scratch cups will take place this evening November 28 in the Castle Inn, Castle Street, Castlebar at 9.30pm and the Winter League will tee off this weekend.

Ballinrobe

The winter alliance competition held on November 23 saw Vinny Larkin win with a score of 38, Ray Prendergast come second with a 36 and Colm Keane take third on 35.

Ballyhaunis

The November 23 Stableford competition was won by Barry Freeman with a score of 40, Dermot Finnegan came second with a score of 39 and Brendan Mooney came third with 39 also. Kay Fanning won the ladies’ section with a score of 30, Anne Freely came second with a 29, the same score as third-placed Josie Folliard.
